We write to share with you updates regarding serious concerns raised about an unaffiliated group using violent and unacceptable language and attempting to assert a connection to Columbia University.
In July 2025, the University stated clearly its zero tolerance for the group that calls itself “CUAD.” Last year, the University also took action against the group’s illegal use of the University’s name and trademarks. We are exploring additional legal avenues to prevent their continued unauthorized use of the University’s name.
Additionally, last year the University took the step of requiring all recognized student groups, including those who had previously affiliated with “CUAD" in November 2023, to acknowledge and comply with the University’s Zero Tolerance policy in order to retain their official recognition, including access to funding and space on campus. All currently recognized student groups have no affiliation with the group that calls itself “CUAD.”
It’s deeply troubling to see this anonymous X account assert a false connection to Columbia, using such unequivocally reprehensible language. The University condemns the use of such violent, abhorrent language, and its use in conjunction with our institution.
To be absolutely clear, “CUAD” is not a recognized student group and is not affiliated, in any fashion, with the University. The University does not know who comprises or leads this anonymous group. The matter has been referred to law enforcement for further investigation. There is no evidence, at this point, that anyone currently in control of this social media account is a Columbia student, staff, or faculty member. The University stands by its Zero Tolerance policy.
