Statement on the University’s Affirmation of Zero Tolerance

November 20, 2025

Columbia University fully supports the right to peaceful protest and gatherings on our campus consistent with our Rules of Conduct. The University maintains a policy of Affirmation of Zero Tolerance which makes clear that organizations that promote violence or encourage disruption of our academic mission are not welcome on our campuses. The University has significant concern that some of the groups listed as co-sponsors of a planned rally for Thursday, November 20, are not recognized by the University and have in the past affiliated with or endorsed individuals or groups who promote violence. The University is clear that it cannot support groups that endorse the promotion of violence.

The University has notified the groups leading the rally of these concerns, including the Barnard AAUP, the Student Workers of Columbia and the Native American Council of Columbia, and they have confirmed they do not endorse, condone, or promote violence and do not support individuals or groups who promote violence.
