University Statements and Announcements

Last summer, we informed the Columbia community about a cyberattack on the University. Our investigation determined this was carried out by a hacker whose stated motivation was political. We found no evidence that this was financially motivated or that the data has been sold or distributed on the dark web. The University reached an agreement to resolve class action litigation brought on behalf of individuals who may have been affected by the cyberattack.

I am committed to a successful search that will identify an outstanding leader for CUIMC and will position us to reach even greater heights.

All University websites and technology services affected by an earlier power issue have been restored. CUIT is continuing to monitor systems for any residual impacts.

In advance of our first day of classes, I want to share with you some updates regarding access to our Morningside campus, an issue I know is of great importance to our entire Columbia community. Today, I am announcing three initial steps that are intended to move us progressively toward increasing access to our campus, while giving us the information and capacity we need to continue to do so thoughtfully.

Earlier this summer, former Acting President Claire Shipman announced the formation of a Presidential Task Force on Shared Governance. Today, I’m pleased to share with you the membership of the task force and more information about the vital work it will undertake in the months ahead.

I am delighted to announce my appointment of Michael Andreasen to serve as Columbia University’s executive vice president for university development and alumni relations, effective September 15, 2026.

As many of you are likely aware, in late May, the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) proposed sweeping revisions to the Uniform Guidance, the rules, governing federal grants and other forms of federal financial assistance. These proposed changes would affect the basic framework through which federal agencies award, manage, and terminate federal grants.

Today I am delighted to officially join Columbia University as your 21st president.

I’d like to offer an update on the recent, collaborative process to review our University Senate and shared governance structures. I am deeply appreciative of the Senate Review Committee’s recent report and recommendations for how we might work together to advance Columbia’s mission. Consistent with those recommendations, I write to announce the creation of the Task Force on Shared Governance, introduce its co-chairs, and share information about the Task Force’s charge.
