West Harlem Development Corporation In-Kind Benefit Overview

Columbia University has committed to make available to the local community access to a range of existing Columbia University facilities, services and amenities. For more information, see Section II.E of the West Harlem Community Benefits Agreement. 

Criteria for consideration: 

  • Be a nonprofit organization based in West Harlem (MCD9); and/or
  • Be a nonprofit organization serving the West Harlem community;
  • Does not include NYC/NYS governmental agencies (e.g. the Board of Education).  
  • Application requests must be reasonable, viable and conducive to space needs.
  • Does not include: Columbia University departments or affiliations (incl: clubs, fraternities, faculty).
  • Does not include: paid admission events, Galas or Fundraisers.

WHDC may consider approving up to three (3) programming events a year per applicant.

In-Kind Benefit Request Review Process: 

  1. The application will be open one week per month (first Monday-Friday of every month). 
  2. The application should be for an event planned 2-6 months in advance.
  3. CU-GCA will connect applicants with the Columbia event planning team to determine space availability and obtain a price quote for the event. 
  4. After receiving estimated costs for the request from Columbia University, WHDC will approve/deny applications based on their review.
  5. If approved, WHDC and CU-GCA will sign the event contract.
